The other day as I was preparing my boat for the winter, I took some time
to go through the "operator's manual" that I put together when I
purchased the boat. I have done this for each boat that I have owned and
I cannot tell you how helpful it has been to have this information at
hand. This includes collecting and compiling manuals for every major
piece of equipment including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses
of all suppliers and companies. In addition I have written and compiled
my own which has forced me to investigate and think through each system
and any potential problems. I keep this information readily accessible in
a rack behind the pilot seat.
Trace each system and draw neat, simple diagrams that will be useful in
worrisome conditions. Consider placing numbered tags on some connections
and switches and reference them in your manual. Diagram the position of
lifting slings and yacht placement on the railway. Make notes on size and
specifications of running rigging or high wear parts so that replacements
can be easily ordered. Know your prop specifications before leaving home
waters. Note locations of spare parts in the boat so you do not have to
waste time looking.
Keep these notes on durable paper and non-soluble ink -- photographs are
extremely helpful, especially for theft or damage. When it is time to
sell, this manual can be a fine sales tool. No buyer can fail to be
impressed with a clear and complete document. How is that for an
off-season project?
Carrying preparedness a bit further, it is not too early to start thinking
about the Holiday events in December. We need help with decorations
outside the clubhouse and then the tree trimming inside. The
Children's
Christmas Party will follow along with a visit from Santa, and then
the
Special People's Cruise and
Lighted
Boat Parade, and annual Christmas
Party. Dates and times will be in the next Towline.
