The Definitive BYC Dog Story from the ...

The Really Old Days

The BYC History article in the Jan. '04 Towline brought back a memory
that we should share. In 1965 some of us BYC types were discussing the
past. We were in the old clubhouse, at the same site as the present
one. Past Commodore H.L. (Hob) Haven gave the following account of how
things were in the "really" old days :
"In the early thirties our boats were moored to a pier at Rocky
Point. (Charleston City Dock). We had a little shed out there where we
stored our gear - and "popped a cork or two". At the shore end of the
pier were cages where the Humane Society kept stray animals.
One evening I and three or four other yachters had a few snorts at the
shed and decided to wend our ways home. As we proceeded along the pier,
we noticed four dogs locked up in those cages. Feeling no pain - but
feeling sorry for the unfortunate animals, we decided to open the cages
and set the dogs free. When the dogs were freed - they figured they
were among friends, and decided to follow us. Knowing that we could not
take the dogs home, we had to find a way to dispose of them. We solved
our problem when we reached the end of the pier. Several cars were
parked along the street, so we checked each one. When we found an
unlocked door - - we opened it and put a dog inside! When we ran out of
dogs, we went happily on our ways. We sometimes wondered how the dogs
liked their new homes!"As heard by
Lew Belden
Commodore, 1970
