Bremerton Centennial 1901-2001
The Sun continues its monthly historical
retrospective of Bremerton, which officially
became a city Oct. 1, 1901. City residents
will celebrate the centennial Oct. 16 of this
year. The eight-part series, which was
launched March 18, studies the people, the
vital role of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
and growth issues such as transportation,
business and infrastructure.

1938 (March 18) - Bremerton Chamber of Commerce is incorporated. William Gates, Sr.,
grandfather of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, is Treasurer of the Chamber and signs incorporation papers.

William Bremer, a foward-looking German immigrant, realized the
economic potential of founding a town so close to the naval station
and platted the town of Bremerton in 1891. It was later incorporated
in 1901....

Lake Union: The evolution of a dream

Back in 1854, Lake Union was the backwater of a backwater town. A natural
dam at Montlake sealed it off from the higher Lake Washington, while only
a tiny stream through Fremont drained it into Salmon Bay.

"Russ Sweany, a local real estate broker, couldn't see a yacht club
happening in Port Orchard anytime soon. He cruised his boat ... to
Bremerton Yacht Club
and asked if he and his wife could become members there. They wanted to
belong to a club that had some moorage and the Bremerton club seemed to
have everything a boater could want. They had just recently been
established as a yacht club ..."
"They were denied! They went back home licking their wounds when a short
time later they got word from the Bremerton club with the reason they were
rejected: The BYC members had already decided to help the Port Orchard
yachtsmen form their own club. That’s about how it happened in 1956..."
