THE HISTORY OF THE BREMERTON YACHT CLUB

Since the Skipperettes is the Auxiliary of Bremerton Yacht Club, we should be aware of our Parent Organization. Bremerton Yacht Club was founded in June of 1929. First Commodore was Floyd Phillips; Vice Commodore, Hob Haven (one of our Skipperettes) and Rear Commodore, Elmer Brooks. The Club was located in Sinclair Inlet in the vicinity of the Navy's Inactive ships facility. Nearly ten years later, Apri1 1938, the Skipperettes Auxiliary was founded, a group of 37 women was present and dues of $2.00 annually was agreed upon.

1938:

"Object of the Club shall be the encouragement of social activity and promotion of friendliness among its members."

First Officers were:

La Verne Phillips -President
Dolly Brandelin -Vice President
Sally Prichard -Treasurer
Florence Hillberry -Secretary
Supplies purchased for the galley: Salt and Pepper shakers, creamers and sugar bowls, coffee and tea pots, mirror for hall and glasses.
Gave the first Christmas gift to the Skippers -a check for $25.00 -that was a lot of money in those days.
The Skipperettes were asked to plan and cook the Christmas dinner for the dinner/dance.
Held card parties often thru the year -25 cents a person to play.
The Skipperettes entertained the lady's auxiliaries from Everett and Tacoma Yacht Clubs; (Could this be the seed from which our present day W.I.C. grew?).

Quite an impressive first year!

1939:

Meetings were held in different locations. Twanoh State Park, City Parks and some members entertained in their homes.
Sewing parties and card parties were held, charging 25 cents a guest. Skipperettes pins became available.
Christmas Dinner was held at the Edgewater Beach Country Club -$1.25 a plate. Gift to Skippers $20.00.

1940:

Joint meeting in January with Skippers for Installation.
Served a cafeteria luncheon during Heavy Weather Cruise.
Donated $5.00 to the Elks Lodge for the Iron Lung Fund.
Christmas dinner was a Potluck at 75 cents a person, a limit of 75 people. Used to hire a dishwasher for such events.

1941:

Card parties big this year -some held in the evenings.
A Baby Gift Fund was started for prospective mothers.
Potluck Picnics at Illahee Park (held meetings thru the summer)
World War II started.
Christmas Dinner was eaten out but no mention as to where.

1942:

Red Cross sewing days were established: members brought their own sandwiches.
Entertained Servicemen.
Donated to Bremerton Recreation Commission.
Meetings with other clubs were postponed for the duration.
War Bonds were purchased from time to time and any raffle prizes given at meetings were WAR Stamps.
Christmas Dinner was put on for $1.50.

1943:

First mention of Skipperettes fixing dinner for men when they worked on the Club House. (Work Party Galley duty way back then!)
Members donated to the Blood Bank.
Call came for more volunteers for the Red Cross Motor Corps and also for help in preparing surgical dressings.
July and August meeting were picnics in City Park.
Skipperettes again cooked Christmas Dinner -charged $1.50 a plate.
Gift exchange limited to 50 cents.
Note: Doris Libby joined this year.

1944:

Still holding joint Installations with the men.
Donated to the Infantile Paralysis Fund.
Still buying War Bonds.
Meetings were held in members homes.
Christmas Dinner and Dance held at the I.O.O.F Hall.
This year went fast!

1945:

Because of the railroad being built to service the Ship Yard the Club House was moved to its present location of Phinney Bay. Two WWII project houses were added to the existing structure. Donated $100. For work needed because of the move. New drapes were purchased for the Club Room. Landscaped the grounds around the building. Potluck dinners were held for men working on the floats. Gave $5.00 to Red Cross Drive. Held first Children's Christmas Party. Space cleared for picnic area on the island by the men. It was suggested the men buy the Christmas Dinner and Skipperettes would go and eat it! ( No mention as to where -perhaps Hadden Hall in West Park?) Our Doris Libby was Secretary this year.

1946:

Entertained Sailors from the Navy Hospital. Were asked to help on House to House Canvas for the Community Chest Drive- Easter Egg Hunt for the children -eggs furnished by the parents. (How times have changed.) Purchased coffee makers. Held rummage sale at Farmer's Market- Knotical News made its first appearance Meetings and/or picnics were held all summer long. By-Law change -"and to lend assistance to the Yacht Club whenever possible" was added to the original Object Clause in the By-Laws, as it stands to this day. Christmas Bazaar held at Farmers' Market. Meetings with Everett Barnacles and Tacoma Shipmates were resumed. Have 91 members now!

1947:

Gladys Stevenson was President. Name familiar? That's because it was Sharren Stevenson's Mother-in-law. More familiar names to a lot of us: Gladys Edson, Joan Mathews, Rosalie Phillips and Doris Libby were busy serving on many committees. Bought a stove with War Bonds and monies from saving account. Big Style Show and Tea were held in April- Suggestion was voiced to print a cook book to sell. Rummage Sale and Christmas Bazaar were again held. "Wear slacks, bring garden tools, children and sandwiches." Purpose, to further clean up and beautify a picnic spot on the island.

1948:

Ten years have passed -Skipperettes are doing well and efficiently carrying on as in the past. Valentine's Dance, involvement in the Heavy Weather Cruise, a Style Show and Children's Christmas Party. This year a fishing derby was held. Queen City Yacht Club's Tarettes joined us in the exchange meetings with Tacoma and Everett. Summer Meetings and/or picnics were canceled. Club cruise to Quartermaster Harbor and Horsehead Bay (in Carr Inlet) over Labor Day Weekend. Counter tops were repaired and a double sink cabinet were the galley improvements. The Knotical News was appearing monthly and being very well received

History 101- Part II

As I perused the archives of Skipperettes for the next decade, this is a smooth running auxiliary: Held rummage sales, Bazaars, Bake Sales, Tolo Dances (when the girls ask the fellows), Skippers Night, Easter Egg Hunts for the children as well as Christmas Parties for the Children. Helping with the Heavy Weather Cruise weekend. Sponsoring the Girl Mariners: at one time there was a group called the Penguin Club. (Doc. Foster made their sail boats) -the parent group was the Peninsula Sailing Association. Also, for a short time there was a Junior Yacht Club -made up of children of BYC and Skipperettes. These were disbanded later due to lack of interest. Purchasing needs for the galley and Club House generally was an on going project. So much so that at one point in 1951 the Finance Chairman had to remind the members they were willing to work toward such purchases "but the main purpose of our organization was social!" end of quotation.

A Mrs. Ivy Leach is mentioned from time to time. She was the caretaker and lived in the back of the old Club House: a super person from what some of our senior members have told me. Some of the first Christmas Dinners and Heavy Weather Cruise breakfasts were prepared in her kitchen. Entertained Interclub groups and attended same. Earlier when the flooring for the old Club House porch was being discussed, special insert tiles were suggested such as a Burgee, Anchor, a Compass Rose. The Bureie was voted down as Skipperette Betty Yuhl thought it improper to walk on our Club Burgee. The Cloth Burgees were made by Skipperettes at a cost of 98 cents -took 6 hours to make two.
Christmas presents to the Skippers were a ventilating fan, a punch bowl, one year no present and a cart for the floats. When purchases for the galley and club house were heavy the presents for the Skippers were omitted -sounds fair to me. The Treasury seemed sound -balances between $290 and $990 with operating expenses reported at $200. It was necessary to raise this amount in addition to what was needed for special projects throughout the year.
Board meetings were started in 1953 -Helen Smith was President, Ann Haven Vice- President, Doris Anderson Treasurer, Florence Walton Corresponding Secretary, Joyce Finke Recording Secretary.

1955:

First mention of Big Sisters for new members. I wonder why this idea was dropped and could it be reinstated? A Box Lunch Social was held -a shoe box wrapped in brown paper tied with string. Doesn't that sound like fun?

1949:

Doris and Marx Libby's daughter was born.
Aided the Lions Club in an effort to raise funds for the Bremerton Swimming Pool.
Skipperette Pins were available for $3.40.
President for this year was Joan Mathews -Vice President Maggie Mosher -Recording Secretary Lilyan Williams -Corresponding Secretary Betty Yuw -Treasurer Helen Bender.

1950:

Ladies room redecorated -Skippers were asked to repaint the toilet seat. They refused -- SO we did it ourselves and sent the bill for the paint to the Skippers!
Through the years Skipper Contact was the Commodore's wife, who was also a Skipperette.

1952:

The Galley Band was making a name for themselves playing at Coontz Junior High and the Lady Elks to name a few engagements.

1953:

Board Meetings started this year.
Sponsored the Girl Mariners.
Helen Smith was President.

1954:

Dues were raised to $3.00.
Girl Mariners were given a boat.
Ann Haven was President.
Reminded the membership that Auxiliary meant help.
Decided 15 members were a quorum.

1955:

Purchased dishes for the Galley, again.
Served 98 guests at our Interclub Luncheon.
Beulah Herges was President.

1956:

Booth at Boat Show. Taking donation for the purchase of Sucia Island.
Jane Huston was President.

History 101 - Part III

1957:

Doris Stuffel was President.
The usual (by this time) Rummage Sale was held to boost the Treasury.
The Salmon Bake was held at Pt. Monroe.
Purchases for the galley were juice servers, silverware, cups, ash trays and a hand cart and coffee makers.
An Inaugural Ball was held for new Officers of both BYC and Skipperettes.
Held our Interclub Luncheon at the Elks Club. Flag Officers wives were invited even if they weren't Skipperettes.
At one meeting the entertainment was an earring exchange -doesn't that sound like fun?
The real beginning of WIC.

1958:

Another year starts and Gladys Eyler as President.
Our 2Oth Anniversary.
The Interclub Luncheon was held at the Officer's Club in the ShipYard.
Skippers Night is an annual affair, along with Mother's Day/Past Presidents Luncheon.
Rummage sale, Christmas Bazaar and a Spaghetti Dinner were the money makers.
It is also an annual Skipperette "privilege" to help during Heavy Weather Weekend.
First participated in Tyee Ladies Day Race.
Interclub is thriving and growing.

1959:

Officers for the year were Pres. Gladys Parke (resigned later because they moved); Vice President Althea Ratslaff; Recording Secretary Bernice Benson; Corresponding Secretary Rose Maggard; Treasurer Lorraine Brendt. These names plus Ann Haven, Helen Smith, Rosalie Phillips, Ester Gundlach, Mary Kuhlman, Helen Hudson and Elsie Fickeisen will become very familiar to the working of this organization.

Interclub was held at the Norway Hall with six clubs being present. Spruced up the powder room: painted, added new mirror and florescent lighting.
New shades were purchased and material for new tablecloths.
Althea Ratslaff moved up to the Presidency and Marge Benson was voted in as Vice President.
Installation was not held with the men this year.

1960:

Now we are in the 60's. Marge Benson is the President.
Still holding Interclub Luncheons at the Norway Hall.
No Tolo Dances -do to lack of Volunteers to be on the Committee.
No bazaar this year, however, did have the ever faithful rummage sale and a card party that was open to the public. Salads and dessert were served for $1.00 per person.
Held a Bingo Party for the Horton Nursing Home residents.
The annual Christmas Party with exchange gifts -much as we do today.
Two interesting programs were put on -perhaps some of you remember June Nordquist and Winifred Dove, teachers at West High. They presented a slide show and commentary on their trip to Russia and East and West Germany. That certainly must have been quite an experience.
The other program was newspaper columnist Adele Ferguson -she is Barbara Skelly's sister.
An outdoor flag was the Skippers' Christmas gift.

1961:

By this time it is a given that Skipperettes provide lunches for the Men's Work Parties. Interclub was held at the Hearthstone Restaurant. Everett is without an auxiliary so won't be included. Jonnie Foster was asking for articles for the Knotical News. First year a Christmas Ship was mentioned but no details. WIC Officially named: 14 Clubs as members.

1962:

Doris Libby Doris Libby is President this year . Rummage Sale seems to have been the constant money maker . Lengthy discussions were held from time to time pertaining to Interclub: How many luncheons to have, how many clubs should be invited, should we eliminate the club prizes and just have door prizes and should we entertain in our own club. Charge is $2.25 per person. Treasury was in good shape -$574.36 on hand. Salmon Bake held at Illahee State Park -355 were served. 1963: Esther Gundlach was President. This was our Silver Anniversary year. A special Tea was planned. Tacoma Yacht Club was to be invited as they are the Club that helped us get started; also all Officers from the other Clubs. Ann Haven came in first in the Ladies Day Race. Five boats were entered. The Rummage Sale brought in $200. No Christmas gift for the Skipper's as they didn't need anything. Made styrofoam ornaments for the Club tree. Galley purchases: plates, soup spoons and coffee servers -does this never end!? Our Interclub Luncheon carried out the 25th Anniversary theme. Treasury was down a little -$260.13. 1964: The President, Elizabeth Merrifield, was nominated as "Women of the Year". Held our Interclub in our own Club House. A discussion was held about donating to the Sheltered Workshop -as a Club we would not, but members could do it on an individual basis if they so desired. Had Girl Mariners along on Ladies Race Day as co-observers. Made new table cloths and allotted $800.00 as our part toward remodeling the ladies Powder Room. No Children's Christmas Party this year. Mr. Irving Allen, from Forget-Me Not Florist, was the guest speaker in November. Treasury feeling a little better -$443.96. 1965: A big discussion was presented in regards to dish washing. Seems a Mr. Fenton agreed to continue to wash regular luncheon dishes for $3.00, large affairs for $5.00. This was the first year plaques were given to the winners of the Ladies Day Race: Jean Dominy received the plaque for 1964 and Helen Hudson for this year. Ann and Hob Haven made the mounting for us. Turned down the Olympic Peninsula Enterprises offer of a $5.00 membership, since our policy does not include Community Service Support as a group the matter was tabled. The June picnic was held at Garrett Park, pleasant sunny day -good food too ! Skipper's Night was a potluck and Armin Jahr, Superintendent of Schools, gave a talk on his trip to Russia. A rummage sale was again planned for Spring. Invited to Seattle's Interclub Luncheon, also an invitation to the Medical Auxiliary Disaster Preparedness luncheon. The Tolo Dance was again tabled. (Lack of interest, I guess. ) No mention of a Children's Christmas Party or Gift to the Skippers but all in all a very busy year! 1966: We begin this year with 89 members. Virginia Edwards is President, Elsie Fickeisen is Vice-President, Carmen Keil is Recording Secretary, Nancy Merrifield is Corresponding Secretary and Beryle Woodard is Treasurer. We were invited by Eddie Adams to write to Servicemen in Vietnam. He supplied us with the names and addresses. A Style Show was the entertainment for Skippers' Nite. Jonnie Foster was the commentator, Charlotte Peterson, Gloria Round, Loretta Campbell, Jean Dominy, Maggie Mosher, Marie Givens, Elsie Fickeisen, Beryle Woodard and Carmen Keil were the models -musical background was furnished by Gladys Eyler. The Rummage Sale was held in the old Butler Building. Gig Harbor was first included in WIC. 1967: Virginia did such a good job they voted her in for this year, Elsie Fickeisen moved to Vice President, Ardyce Olsen to Recording Secretary, Marie Cutting to Corresponding Secretary, Gladys Engebretson to Treasurer. A request from Mayor Glenn Jarstad for donations for Vietnam Servicemen gift bags; this was turned down on the ground we are not a philanthropic organization, but organized only to benefit the Club . Bought a piano for the Club and presented it to the Skippers' on Skippers Nite. Donna Ross won the Ladies Day Race, with Helen Hudson in 2nd place and Jean Dorniny, 3rd. Ardyce Olsen resigned as she went back to work -Nancy Merrifield took over as Recording Secretary. 1968: With Elsie Fickeisen as President, several things were accomplished as with all the previous leaders. Helping her to run this good ship "Skipperettes" was Beryle Woodard, Vice President -Jeannette Myers, Recording Secretary -Aileen Crosetti, Corresponding Secretary and Donna Ross, Treasurer. Purchases for the galley were an electric roaster and electric mixer. We also helped to purchase new drapes, to the tune of $1, 000. A decision was made to print a cookbook. The name to be "Ship and Shore." Stainless bowls have been missing from the galley. A discussion was help as to whether we should lock the cupboards ! Ladies Day Race was won by Ardyce Olsen, Gerry Wilhelm, 2nd and Helen Hudson, 3rd. Paula Wittenfeld gave a slide show and commentary on their trip to Bangkok, Australia, Tasmania and the Sydney Hobart Yacht Club Race at the February meeting. Skippers Nite the entertainment was a talk on Wittenfeld's trip to New Zealand and Fiji. They were busy traveling this year. 1969: Beryl Woodard is now the President -Vice President, Dona Ross -Recording Secretary , Jeannette Meyers -Corresponding Secretary, Ardyce Olsen -Treasurer, Gladys Engebretson. Board meetings had been stopped for several years and Beryle suggested they be part of the running of this organization; as you all know, we are still having them every month. Disbanded the Girl Mariners because of inactivity and lack of interest. Stan Wardin and Hob Haven were chosen as Scupperettes. Held the usual Rummage Sale. Also, a Style Show with the Olympic College Nurses and we sold paperback books in the Club. At the March meeting the program was a narrated slide show by Chris Chrey. She had been the Rotary's summer exchange student to Japan -told of her trip to Japan and her adopted family while there. What a marvelous experience for our young people! The china and silverware place settings were brought up to 225; also purchased water pitchers, teapots, bowls and candle holders. 1500 copies of the "Ship & Shore" recipe books were printed. Nonna Barrantine was in charge of this money making venture. The Skipper's Christmas Gift was a Flag and a stand for the Flag. Eva Katzenberger installed her daughter, Dona Ross, as the 1970 President of Skipperettes. 1970: President Dona Ross, Vice-President Helen Hudson, Recording Secretary Dixie Wright, Corresponding Secretary Ardyce Olsen and Treasurer Peggy Castle completed the slate of officers for this year. Interclub Luncheons are as popular as ever. Rummage Sale and Recipe Books are the money makers. Still "privileged" to help on Heavy Weather Weekend, even to making the Race Pennants. Served the luncheon for the Skippers Blue Gavel meeting at BYC. Rearranged galley cupboards. Changed from cube sugar to sugar packets. Bought a 36-cup coffee maker. Discussed purchasing a dishwasher. A Tolo Dance was held prior to the Ladies' day Race. Dona Ross, Ardyce Olsen, Gerry Wilhelm, Helen Hudson and Nonna Barrentine are regulars in this race. 1971: Another busy year for Skipperettes -This year Helen Hudson is at the Helm; Ardyce Olsen is Vice President; Recording Secretary, Dixie Wright; Corresponding Secretary, Jean McAboy; Treasurer, Peggy Castle. Skipperettes now have 112 members. Elks Yacht Club requested membership in WIC but were denied- Had Tillies cater our WIC Luncheon and it was very successful. Much discussion was held but final outcome was no WIC Boat in the Opening Day Parade. No Ladies Day Race this year, lack of interest. We entertained the Daffodil Court -14 Princesses, 7 Chaperones and 7 City Officials - served them coffee and cake- Held a potluck dinner honoring former caretaker Ivy Leach. Had a Boat Tour -5 sailboats, 8 powerboats on display with tea and refreshments served in the Club House. Brought in $315. And of course, the annual Rummage Sale. Skippers' requested men's aprons, dishtowels, ladle and large pitchers for the galley. Bought a dishwasher for the Club -the Skippers installed it. Decided new table cloths and relish dishes would be the Skippers Christmas Gift. 1972: This is Ardyce Olsen's year as President. Peggy Castle is Vice President, Rosalia Meehan is Recording Secretary, Dixie Wright is Corresponding Secretary and Linda Hostvedt is Treasurer. It was suggested to have another Tour of Boats and shelve the Rummage Sale for now. Perhaps one in the Fall. Louise Ray demonstrated "Bottle Gardens" as the Interclub Luncheon program. Did have a Ladies Day Race -7 boats were entered -Helen Hudson was-the winner. Peggy Castle resigned as Vice President due to illness. Dixie Wright was voted in and also accepted Chairmanship of Interclub. Nauti-Gals Jean Atteridge, Ricky McWilliams and Ardyce Olsen entertained with " A First Mates Life," led the group singing and were accompanied by Eddie Adams. Fall rummage sale netted $300- Christmas Gift to Skippers' was $50. -$30 for a Santa Claus suit and the balance for a light over the dishwasher. 1973: Now we start another year with Dixie Wright as President. Interclub Luncheons are being well attended- Had drapes and carpet cleaned professionally. Held a Wine Tasting Party prior to dinner on Skippers' Nite. Wavetoppers Interclub Luncheon was held at Frederick & Nelson's lunch room. Rummage Sale was held in the old Kentucky Fried Chicken building at 6th and Park. Made $303. Gave $500 to Skippers for Christmas for completing the new Ladies head. Nine boats were in the Ladies Day Race -Zelma Hill won Ist, Helen Hudson 2nd and Jean McAboy 3rd. Plaques were presented for the winners in 1972: 1st to Helen Hudson, 2nd to Nonna Barrentine, 3rd to Jean McAboy. We took in 16 new members. 1974: Nonna Barrentine is President and her assisting officers are Rozina Belden as Vice President, Nona Lansberry as Recording Secretary, Sandy McKay as Corresponding Secretary and Linda Hostvedt as Treasurer . Some interesting programs lined up: Bremerton's Fire Dept. Rescue 1, Glass Collecting (about Depression and Carnival glass), patchwork quilting, Tupperware Party, talk on narcotics by the Sheriff's Dept, slide show on a trip to Russia by Eva Katzenberger. Barbara Skelly suggested Kleenex, hand lotion and hair spray be put in the Ladies Heads. Jean McAboy was tanked for hemming and pinking all of the Race Pennants. 1975: This was International Woman's Year as decreed by the United Nations. No Boat Show because of Skipper's projects. Crazy Quilt project spear headed by Dixie Wright was quite popular -a busy project plus a social event. Jean Dominy suggested a shower facility for visitors such as other Clubs had. This was tabled as a future project ! The Boat Show tour was put back on the agenda. This is the first year a Boat Float for Daffodil Festival in Tacoma was mentioned. A Style Show was put on -clothes from Kahn's Men and Ladies Apparel. Capt. Ted Morneau and Dick Hershbuger were models along with many Skipperettes. Elsie Fickeisen became Vice President as Nona Lansberry resigned due to a business opportunity . First mention of Club Cruise to Queen City Outstation. All thru these years, Skippers Nite, Mother's Day/Past President's, picnics and our Christmas Party with exchange gifts have been on the agendas -Some things just seem to last as good old times! Skipperettes History Part IV 1976: Peggy Castle was President and it was a busy year- We enjoyed luncheons at four other Yacht Clubs, and we entertained a WIC Luncheon. Virginia Edwards was elected President of WIC for 1977. A Wine Tasting and Spaghetti Dinner honored our Skippers. Work parties were held throughout the year for the two money making projects -a Bazaar and Rummage Sale. Postage was raised on mailing out the Knotical News and our luncheons went from $1.00 to $1.50. Ann Haven and Beryle Woodard are working on a Skipperette History Scrap Book. A large work party was held to wash, iron and rehang Club drapes. Ladies Day Race winners were Helen Hunt -1st, June Spalding -2nd and Jan Newkirk - 3rd. Big purchases were a typewriter, a briefcase for the President, a duplicating machine and for the galley -a can opener . Items missing from the galley --two dust pans! ! Will this pilfering never end? 1977: Barbara Skellys' year. Since the Bazaar enriched our treasury by $1600. Last year another one is in the planning -work parties were set up and other Yacht Clubs were invited to join us on Bazaar Day. The Ladies Day Race had an added attraction -the Skippers prepared; lunch for US! ! - and the winners were: Marty Morken -1 st, Jackie Phillips -2nd and Jan Newkirk 3rd Eddie Adams was a big hit as the Auctioneer at one of our meetings -equally so was Art Mosley with his magic show -on Skippers Night. Art and Marty Morken were chosen as Boating Family of the Year. Again we were privileged to help the Skippers during Heavy Weather Weekend! Skippers' gift -an ice maker- Jim Hill donated a super Santa Claus suit. First Christmas Party for children and grandchildren of members was held. Jackie Phillips, Shirley Solmon and Ardyce Olsen were in charge. 1978: This is Joan Vehrs year to Skipper the good Ship, Skipperettes. After many discussions last year and this, new drapes were made and installed by the Skipperettes with input and approval of the Skippers. Skippers' Night was our 40th Birthday and Eddie Adams gave a brief history of the auxiliary. A Hilarious Hat show was the program for the Mothers' Day/Past Presidents' luncheon. The hats were fashioned by Jackie Phillips and Cindy Olson. Models were Jan Newkirk, Gerry Wilhelm and Betty Johnson. The By-Laws were revised. Bazaar work shops were held thru out the months. When the Bazaar was held, Poulsbo, Port Orchard and Alderbrook joined us. The Childrens' Christmas Party was put on again- Our Knotical News first sheet was upgraded to a red, white and blue masthead, as we know it today. Now the History Scrap Book that Ann Haven and Beryle Woodard had been working on for months was presented. A job well done. The Skippers' Christmas Gift this year was a pancake batter dispenser. Busy Little Boaters, aren't we! 1979- 1980: Due to the By-Law revision, Joan Vehrs will stay in Office until June -thus changing our year June to June -instead of January to January. The Childrens' Christmas Party was a huge success again. Gene Nelson (Mayor at the time) was Master of Ceremonies and Eddie Adams a most effective and loveable Santa. Members were requested to make reservations for luncheons and dessert meetings to determine the amount of food prepared more accurately. Skippers' Night program was a slide show of the old Club House, cruises and parties presented by Ann and Hob Haven and Elsie and Bob Fickeison. A potluck for departing caretakers Maire and Tom Freil was held after P/C Sail Boat Races. The Childrens' Easter Party is an annual event now. Mothers' Day/Past Presidents Luncheon featured a fashion show from Kahns --Dixie Wright narrator, Jackie Philips, Sharon Lillybridge, Jan Sellars, George Solmon and Roger Phillips as models. A recommendation was made for WIC dues to go from $5.00 to $7.50. June of 1979 we held our Installation and Evelyn O'Beirne became our President. September was busy planning for our Bazaar in October and the Christmas Interclub Luncheon Dec. 12. Reminders to fill bags of ice to replace what one removes were put in the Towline and Knotical News. Ladies Day Race plaques were to be presented at Installation. Past Presidents gifts were voted out. Purchased an address-o-graph machine. Declined joining Port Orchard at Bazaar time. 122 attended the WIC Christmas Luncheon. A large refrigerator with sliding doors was the Skippers' gift this year. 1980-1981: June Spalding is our leader. Elsie Fickeisen suggested we publish cookbooks this year. Believe me that was a year-long project! Jerry Dick and Shirley Solmon started exercise classes twice a week. Juanita Arrnstrong ( our Birthday Girl) joined Skipperettes, along with Nyla Walsh and Dixie Gilbert. The Childrens' Easter and Christmas Parties are definitely annual affairs now. Skipperettes decided to make their Christmas exchange gifts this year. A Ships' Bell was presented to the Skippers' this year with a macrame pull by Hank Kuhlman. 1981-1982: A White Elephant sale was suggested to help pay for the printing of the cookbooks. This is more than one year's project. Helping with Heavy Weather Weekend and lunches for Mens' Work Party days is an every year commitment for Skipperettes. Interclub luncheons were attended throughout the year -- Wave Toppers dropped WIC and Gig Harbor joined. We entertained WIC in April. Art Morken was chosen as Skupperette. At the Past Presidents' Luncheon Zelma Hill was presented her Life Membership. No Ladies Day races this year, lack of interest. Two interesting programs were Nyla Walsh and her stained glass demonstration and a fencing demonstration put on by Olympic College. 1983 -1984: Ladies Day Race this year included sail boats: Results for sail were: Mary Banks -1 st, Faith Reirson -2nd, Nyla Walsh -3rd. For Power: Dottie Risch -lst, Jerry Dick -2nd, Elsie Fickeisen -3rd. Note on earlier purchase of microwave oven -and I quote, " the men promised to build it in during galley remodeling this year" -Jan. 4' 1984! Past President's Dinner was held in October . Mother's Day Luncheon -43 members- 13 quests. Program from Irene's School of Dance. 1984 -1985: The head of this elite organization is now Eleanor Barr. New bookkeeping system was voted in -a more accurate "one-write" system by Safeguard, Suzanne Williamson and Joan Vehrs installed the new system. Jerry Dick was in charge of the Boat Shed Sale which was successful. We're still selling cook books. It was suggested by our President that at Heavy Weather Breakfast the guests serve themselves. Purchases were two dozen pitchers and Bug Control devices. There was a shopping excursion in November (this proved to be a winner!). A reminder to members that a reservation made must be paid for unless canceled in time. Dottie Risch resigned as Treasurer and Pat Downs was elected to fill the position. Jerry Dick asked for money-raiser suggestions. Galley linens to be taken to City Hand Laundry. Boating Safety was stressed by Nyla Walsh and she reminded us of a seminar in 1986. Ladies Day Race results: Elsie Fickeisen -1st, Billie Henry -2nd, Judy Earsley -3rd, Jerry Dick -4th. Betsy Too, Helen and Ralph Smith's boat was the float in the 1984 Daffodil Regatta in Tacoma. Two interesting programs were Katie Proteau's Belleck Ware ( Porcelain ware) and the history of P.S.N.S. by Louise Rek and her husband. 1985 -1986: Irene Belt is President -followed by Vice President Alyson Smalley, Recording Secretary Nona Lansbeny, Corresponding Secretary Verna Lilly and Treasurer Sharon Lillybridge. From the Presidents' notes we learn the first meeting in Sept members told of summer cruise expenences. Gave money in Grady Barrantine's name to cancer fund. Joan Vehrs and Suzanne Williamson again audited the Skipperettes books. Elsie Fickeisen was given her life membership along with Sharon Lively. Sent aluminum cans to recycle center. . Salmon Bake dinner was Sept. 15th. Camera was purchased for Historian to take important pictures for our history . Also a microphone for meeting so everyone is able to hear whoever is speaking. 1986- 1987: Under Dora Doll's regime the annual dues were raised to $7.00. Luncheon meetings were raised to $3.00 and dessert meetings to $2.00. A "Surprise" Raflle a Month was started. Shirley Chase put together a Theater evening for Skipperettes and BYC. Had a potluck and then all went to see "Guys and Dolls". This was really a great evening- The WIC Luncheon at Poulsbo was attended and the Skipperettes went by boat: It's Ours (Lilly's boat), Yankee Doodle (Metcalfs boat) and Raindance (Stansberry's boat). The ladies drew tickets for the boat they were to ride on. The Skipperettes decided not to exchange gifts this year but to give gifts to the Alive Shelter . Children's Christmas Party, Heavy Weather Weekend and the Children's Easter Party were held as usual, along with Men' s Work Party weekends. Other officers serving with Darla were Jean Dominy, Vice President; Betty Metcalf, Treasurer; Rosalia Meehan, Recording Secretary; Sandy McKay, Corresponding Secretary . WIC was represented in Seattles' Opening Day Parade to honor its 30th Anniversary. Also in honor of WIC's Anniversary, a no-host luncheon was attended by all 14 clubs at Sea-Tac Red Lion Inn. .(Special Note) Whales were of interest and concern ten years ago. We had a speaker from the San Juan Research Center. He gave a slide presentation and speech. 1987- 1988: This was the year a personalized parking space was provided for the Skipperette President by Commodore Harry Risch and the Executive Board. Jean Dominy was President; Nona Lansberry, Vice President; Betty Metcalf, Treasurer; Florence Lindstron, Recording Secretary; Sandy McKay, Corresponding Secretary. Skipperettes were eligible to submit the name of a Past President to start thru the Chairs in WIC. Shirley Chase continued to be the Bremerton Community Theater Liaison. Men's Work Parties were held as usual as were the Children's Christmas and Easter Parties. Raflles at every meeting still seem to be successful as fund raisers- Aluminum cans are being collected and turned in for cash. The Christmas Gift Exchange limit is $10.00. 1988 was the Golden Jubilee Year for Skipperettes. Nyla Walsh was chosen to serve on the WIC Board. This is a four year commitment. Served a record of 364 breakfasts at Heavy Weather. . We are now the proud owners of a lovely Silver Service. Skipper's helped with a $125.00 gift to us. Ten Skipperettes took a trip to Poulsbo on two Boats; It's Ours and After Five. A good lunch was served at Harbor House with time left for shopping and a visit to Sly's Bakery. Extra Year Books could be purchased for $.50. A message from Commodore Earlsey in the Knotical News stated that "History has shown that the Skipperettes contribution to BYC is by no means small and that the success of BYC "has been no accident". 1988- 1989: The Safety Afloat section of the Knotical News was renamed to Slippery Banana Peels to trap members into reading the articles. The Knotical News and Towline were mailed out together. The Anchor and Ships Wheel logo on our Knotical News cover page is a replica of our Skipperettes pin. A great debate was finally concluded and we purchased a cash box to be used at all events when money is collected. Up to this time a cigar box had been used. This was a hard won debate as it entailed an expenditure of$25.00! This was the year Skipperettes announced an unsung heroine in the name of Juanita Annstrong for her dedication, enthusiasm and work in the galley. Nona Lansberry was president; Louise Oliver, Vice President; Betty Metcalf, Treasurer; Florence Lindstrom, Recording Secretary; Jane Hipp, Corresponding Secretary. A quorum was changed from 30 to 25. The Board Meetings were held and more were encouraged by President Nona Lansberry. Skipperettes History Part V This last segment of our Histoy will cover the years 1989 to the present time. Louise Oliver was President; Betty Metcalf, Vice President; Ester Laird, Recording Secretary; Corresponding Secretary Jane Hipp; Jeanne Arps, Treasurer. Juanita Armstrong was the Decorating Chairman and reported a need for flower vases. This was the year the momentous decision to purchase a cash box to be used to receive monies at luncheons, desserts and any event when money is taken Dr. Foster donated $60.00 to Skipperettes in memory of his wife, Jonnie, who had been an active member. Some of us here today remember her well. The Interclub luncheons have gone up to $6.50 but are well attended. At the October meeting, Harvey Hudson spoke on the Origin of Harveys Hot Buttered Rum Mix. The product is still being made and sold here in Bremerton. Clair Burwell, Galley Chairman, reported large cooking items were missing from the galley. Also suggested purchasing different wine glasses to replace the plastic ones that the stems drop off of. Difficulty finding a permanent Knotical News Editor. Discussed changing to just a flyer in the men's Towline. February's meeting was canceled due to snow and icy roads. A great many By-Law changes were suggested and implemented during the year that reflect the By-Laws of today. Skippers' Night was a great success with 100 people attending. Skipperettes still busy with Christmas and Easter Parties for the children, Special Peoples Cruise and Heavy Weather Weekend duties. Into the 90's we have: Betty Metcalf, President; Verna Lilly, Vice President; Betty Tucker, Recording Secretary; Ann Ducker, Corresponding Secretary; Jeanne Arps, Treasurer, Juanita Armstorng gave a descriptive presentation of their 3 and1/2 month sailing trip on "Sunshine". The Historian's camera is still missing -do camera's have legs? November we had the WIC Interclub Luncheon -Hawaiian theme, food and dancer -a great way to warm November's chill! Christmas Party brought us a Holiday Musical by Company vocal quartet from Bremerton Community Theater. Marilyn Morris was introduced and Obligated. February's program was a display of old cookbooks brought in by members. One was an 1898 edition. The Children's Easter Party and Skipper's Night were hi-lights in March and April. We had a nostalgic tour of Alice Carrmichael's home in Tracyton, decorated with antiques and specially reproduced embossed tin ceiling, Italian marble fireplace mantel, turned stair banisters. Former location of the Tracyton Hotel. This was a much enjoyed tour. Installation of Officers for 1991- 1992: President, Verna Li1ly; Vice President, Pat Downs; Recording Secretary, Jane Hipp; Corresponding Secretary, Ian Shannon; Treasurer, Helen Deardorf. 1991-1992: First fund raiser in a long time -had a Silver Jewelry sale in October. November Betty Metcalf delighted everyone with her amusing anecdotes of a Thanksgiving theme. Interclub Luncheon theme -Night Before Christmas. Larry Meehan and Dick Stevenson were nominated for Skupperettes. The program for the February meeting was Porcelain Dolls. Ivy Miller brought her collection of antique glass for us to enjoy, telling us a little about were she found them and the history about the items. April was a busy month: Skipper's Night The Board of Directors Quartet for entertainment. The theme for the Interclub luncheon was " Around the World" May is Past Presidents and Mothers Day luncheon -15 Past Presidents were present. Jeanne Lindquist took over office of Recording Secretary. 1992-1993: A new Year and with it a "change of the watch". Pat Downs -President; Dottie Risch - V. President; Jeanne Lindquist -Recording Secretary; Ian Shannon -Corresponding Secretary; Marijo Hudson -Treasurer. A back drop and skirt for the tables for the men' s meetings were made at the request of the Skippers. This magic was accomplished by Pat Downs and Ms. Sylvia Wilson (new member). Dorothy McCotter-Fryar was the first winner of our Lettuce Bowl drawing. This item was added to our meeting agenda under Good & Welfare this year. Also started Door Prizes to enhance our coffers. Board Meetings are reestablished. New pins and Revised By-Laws book were available. The Christmas Auction brought in $181.00 and $100.00 was given to the Food Bank. Donated money to the Skippers to be used in the remodeling of the north Ladies Head. Harry Risch was selected as a Skupperette and was given the prestigious apron. Ruth Wilson joined Skipperettes and Nancy Ellis won the Lettuce Bowl in April. A new regime moves in: President, Dottie Risch; Vice President, Nancy Ellis; Recording Secretary, Jerry Dick; Corresponding Secretary, Jan Shannon; Treasurer, Marijo Hudson. Familiarization of the galley and a demonstration of its appliances was the program for one of the meeting and seemed to have been well received. . The making of Identifying Vests for Heavy Weather Volunteers was spearheaded by Mary Ellen Zimmerman and Juanita Armstrong. Other worker sewing bees were Eleanor Barr , Helen Bynum, Doris Libby. Jo Carr and Flo Floyd were the Knotical News Editors -often asked for news articles from the members. Pat Downs presented Nyla Walsh with a Plaque of Appreciation for her achievement and honor brought to us all when she served as President of Interclub. The Children's Christmas Party was enjoyed by 53 children, parents and grandparents (no tally as to the exact count of the last two groups). Free soup and chili lunch was served Saturday of Heavy Weather. Judy Earsley had made a Nautical Theme Quilt for which chances were sold during Heavy Weather Weekend and the Crab Feed in March. The winner to be announced at the Crab Feed. The lucky one was a lady from Rainier Yacht Club. We hosted a Friday Night Social -it was a St. Patrick's Day theme. 39 members attended the March Luncheon and Spring was in the air -colorful bouquets were on each table and a short poem from the book Everyone Needs Someone. Thanks to Juanita Armstrong. Cliff Lillybridge was elected as our Skupperette of the year. A suggestion was made to put the birthday month and day by each members name in our annual. Kathie Harless won the Lettuce Bowl in April. Inasmuch as the President flew the coup (to Pensacola i.e.) The May luncheon was abley presided over by Vice President Nancy Ellis. Another active year for Skipperettes -June was Installation and so a new set of faces will greet us in September. 1994-1995: Nancy Ellis is at the Helm, Estelle Hamling -Vice President; Arlene Gorski -Recording Secretary; Gladys Engebretson -Corresponding Secretary and Sharren Stevenson - Treasurer. Commodore Wheeler spoke about his background and mentioned some of the things we could do to help the Skippers -many were events we were already involved in such as Heavy Weather, Special Peoples Cruise, Children's Parties, etc. Oct. we had a very interesting program by artist Joan Meisner. She spoke and described life in Saudi Arabia. Had a request from a student at North Kitsap High asking us for a donation to further his education. We regretted we could not help him. Voted to purchase bread and butter plates to go with existing china. Our Christmas Party was an Auction and we netted $507.00. The 1959 Barbie Doll from Target was won by Sue Longenecker. The real winners were Skipperettes and the Bell Ringers. Children's Christmas Party was well attended by 55 children who brought adult guests- We hosted the Christmas WIC Luncheon -102 from other clubs attended. Jo and Flo are still the Editors of the Knotical News and did fine job of it. Busy with Men's Work Parties, Heavy Weather, and Easter Party for the children. St. Patrick's Day Social will be hosted by the Skipperettes again -seems this is becoming an annual affair . Dan Robinson from Elandan Gardens was a guest speaker in January. Gave $299.00 to Charity. Lewie Morris was our Skupperette for this year. Had a Style Show on Skipper's Night. Margaret Lust and her Eggery Hobby was the program for our May Luncheon.
