Labor Day 2009 at Oro Bay

From the Fleet Captain's Locker ~ Re-Cap of the Labor Day Cruise

Twenty boats, one RV, and 52 people made their way down to Oro Bay for the Labor Day Cruise. We kicked off the 3-day weekend with a Friday night potluck. On Saturday, we took 3rd place in the Anderson Island Parade with our 'Chuck Wagon' float, designed and constructed by Capt. Mark Miller. The covered wagon, powered by John Rosendale, Leo Longenecker, four BYC Captains on stick horses, and 'pooper scooper' Capt. Rich Hunt, received cheers and giggles from the crowd.

In the afternoon, we held our first 'Dinghy Bracket Race', coordinated by Mr. Fleet Captain, Rob Bruins. Eleven participants, ranging from the only human propelled kayak by Deana Brett, to a 25 HP tender, competed in a head to head single elimination tournament. Many of the races were virtual dead heats at the finish line. Capt. Steve Brett passed Capt. John Carlson right at the line to capture a 'one of a kind' sandblasted BYC melted wine bottle, crafted by BYC artist, Capt. Don Evans. We celebrated Steve's victory with 'Margaritas' on the dock, followed by a Mexican potluck.

Fire Chief & BYC Member Jim and his volunteer crew

On Sunday afternoon, the skies decided to open up putting a damper on our 'duck' race, but the BBQ went off without as much as a hitch, thanks to the foresight of the fire-fighters who were prepared and set up tents earlier in the day. BYC members were treated to a delicious meal of steak, chicken, beans, salad, and bread. Everyone stayed warm and dry as we were entertained by a Jazz Trio Band. THANK YOU Fire Chief, Jim Bixler and the Anderson Island Fire Department!

CORRECTIONS: Kevin McStay's band was NOT able to play!
