Volunteered Boats Needed
for the North American Invitational Championship Log Race (NAI)
in Early September 2006

Bremerton Yacht is a member of the International Power Boat Association
(IPBA), which is the sanctioning body for the major log races held in
the Pacific Northwest, to whom the club pays annual dues in the amount
of $50.00. IPBA is, in turn, a member of the North American Cruiser
Association (NACA), a national association responsible for the
coordination of log racing efforts among the 13 log racing associations
existing nationally. Each year, one association, as scheduled on a
rotational basis, hosts the North American Invitational Championship
Log Race (NAI), to which the champion from each association is invited
to compete for the title of North American Log Racing Champion of the
Year. The South Sound Section of IPBA, to which BYC belongs, is
scheduled to host the NAI in early September 2006 to be held out of the
Gig Harbor Yacht Club.

Inasmuch as it is impractical for the contestants to bring their own
boats to the contest from around the nation, it falls upon the hosting
organization to find local boat owners who are willing to “share” their
boat for this event. “Sharing” means that the contestant operates the
boat during the timing runs and during the actual contest with the
owner onboard during both of these events; the owner operates the boat
at all other times. Fuel expenses are covered by the contestant. The
preferred type of boat being sought is diesel-powered with a cruise
speed somewhere between 8 and 10 knots.

Participating in this event as a “donor boat” is an excellent way to
learn how the national “hot dog” log racers do so well and to see how
your boat is operated by an experienced champion log racer. To date,
Captains Owen Ritter and Dan Robinson and myself have committed to be
boat donors. A total of 17 boats will provide each contestant with a
boat plus provide a couple of spare boats as backups.

This year the South Sound Section of IPBA really consists of only three
YCs with active log racing programs - Gig Harbor YC, Port Orchard YC
and BYC, which means that these are the three groups responsible for
making this championship event succeed. IPBA is recognized nationally
for conducting the most challenging log races and having the highest
level of participation, and our own Heavy Weather Race is still the
“Big Daddy of Them All”. The success of our hosting efforts will
reflect on our reputations (BYC, GHYC and POYC) as upstanding Pacific
Northwest yacht clubs in the impressions we make on those coming from
across the country to compete for national honors.

If you can help us out by participating as a donor boat owner, please
contact Dick Timmerman (IPBA Contest Boat Chair) via email at
rgtimm@cablespeed.com prior to June 15. This is a Social Event to be
greatly enjoyed. Thank you for your consideration.
