Now Hear This!

(The small things that BYC members sometimes forget or simply ignore)

Some are By-Laws or Regulations others are just common courtesy or, practice:

A
Antifreeze Disposal - [Please click: Source*]

Appearance - On a housekeeping issue, I have recently noticed debris such as soda cans, paper coffee cups, tissues, and plastic shopping bags left around the Club and on the ground in the parking area. Yes we have a Caretaker who provides our janitorial services, but he is not hired to cleanup after us. Those members working around the railway and in the park area, please check your shoes before you enter the lounge. There has recently been some severe carpet stains in the lounge which cannot be blamed on Hu Dat coffee. The appearance of our Club is the responsibility of all the members and reflects upon all of us. Please take a minute to look around and help keep it clean! [Source]

Appliances - BYC is NOT part of the County Dump. No appliances of ANY type are to be left for disposal at the Club. Electrical and/or insulated appliances contain Hazardous Materials, and there is a fee for disposal. Appliances must be personally transported by the individual Members to the proper disposal site, and you must pay the Hazmat Fee as well. Please do not impose the burden of disposal on your fellow Club Members.[Source]

C
Carts - Return dock carts when you are through so our famous Cart Boy or you don't have to chase them down. And when rain is imminent or forecast, tip them up off their wheels to keep them dry for the next user; clean them if you soil them. [

Carts - If you are coming up the brow, and you see too many carts sitting at the foot, bring one or two up to the clubhouse so others can use them.

Carts - Click here for more "Cart Don'ts" directly from the "Cart Boy".

D
Dinghy - You may store your dinghy on the "Dinghy Float", but you have to notify the Float Committee, and you will be charged a nominal fee ($10.oo per month) for this service. (Beware what may happen if you just deposit it there!)
Dogs - Dogs, if not on personal property, (read boat or boat shed) should be on a leash at BYC.

Dogs - Clean up after your dog regardless of where it leaves its mess.

Dogs - Dogs in the picnic areas are not welcome. This includes Oro Bay.

F
Floats - During the Winter, if you see a faucet running and the temperature forecast is freezing or even "near freezing", please don't shut off the faucet. [Source].

Freeze protection - During the winter, remember if you see a potable water line running during freezing weather DON'T be a good Samaritan by turning it off as it is running to prevent freezing of the potable water lines. [Source]

Fuel Pump - The (water) hose at the fuel pump is NOT to be used to flush holding tanks or hoses [Source].

H
Hazardous Storage Area - [

    1. Do not leave containers of any kind in the shed I.E. 1 gal. Anti-freeze bottles or used oil filters. You can drain them but do not leave them there. Manage your time when draining containers by setting them up to drain and coming back later that same day to discard the container.

  1. If you notice a tank nearing its full mark, Put a "FULL DO NOT USE" note on the tank and contact the Environmental Chair who will arrange for it to be pumped.

  2. If you spill anything in or near the sheds, clean it up.

  3. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT leave any containers laying around with substances in it.

  4. All barrels should be used ONLY for the marked liquids. The "Environmental Committee" attached a statement (on pink paper) entitled USED OIL COLLECTION BENEFIT OR CURSE to the October 2003 Towline. Read & save it!

I
Ice - Taking ice bags from the cooler and not replacing 2 for one constitutes a violation of a BYC regulation, and makes you a dirty lowdown ice bandit. [More!]

Ice - Is for boating and club use but not to be removed from BYC for home use.

O
Oro Bay -

P
Parking - The north parking lot is by tradition for short-term parking only. Long term parking over 24 hours should be in the south lot. The longer the absence, the further south and west you should park.

Parking - When traffic cones are in place, don’t move them.

[More Parking ...]

Pets - PETS must be kept on a leash at all times when on Club Grounds. Please be courteous to other members and observe all rules governing pets [Source]

R
Railway -
Present Railway Rules can be found here*, incl. a "Remember Sheet" issued in June 2007 by the Railway Chair. It is probably a good idea to print out some of the rules and remember pages and have them with you next time you are pulling out your yacht.

Railway - When using the pressure washer to clean your boat remember to follow all instructions posted on the wall near the controls.Following these instructions will help prevent damaging the very expensive high pressure pump. [Source]

Railway - Clean up your act before your boat goes back into the water (especially if the next boat comes up right after yours). "COLLECT ALL DEBRIS AND DISPOSE IN THE DUMPSTER." (#8 of Pressure Washing Checklist)

Railway - SWEEP the railcar and ramp/apron clean of debris after pressure washing, sanding, painting or other activities that would leave debris. DO NOT use pressure washer or fresh water hose to clean ramp/apron or railcar. (#7 on Pressure Washing Checklist). There are several brooms ready to be used.

Railway - Do not allow children under the age of fourteen on the rail car at any time. [Source: Towline 12/99]

Railway - Skippers who are not able to use their scheduled time should notify the railway chair. If time allows, captains on the posted standby list will be contacted. Trading times or allowing another captain to use your assigned time is not allowed by railway rules without prior approval of the railway chair. [Source: Towline 5/01]

Recycle Area - Please keep the recycle area clean and neat; this area is for the disposal of boat and BYC related materials only. Do not bring it from home. [Source]

RVs & Boat Trailers - If you are bringing your RV or Boat trailer to the Yacht Club, please let the R/C know in advance so that he/she can schedule and follow the 24-hour rule. Several members of the Club and the executive committee have asked that we use the guidelines of the 24 hours more faithfully. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the existing policy please feel free to call the R/C. [Source]

S
Scrap metal - Do not haul scrap metal from home to BYC for disposal. (Cliff Lillybridge removes this scrap metal only as a courtesy to BYC).

Security - When you encounter a person unfamiliar to you on BYC property, introduce yourself and ask nicely if they are a member, ask their name, if they are not a member and are not with a member, challenge them and escort them off of BYC property, remember you would expect the same of another member. Report the incident to the Club Manager, Caretaker, Security Chairman and or a Bridge Officer immediately. [Source]

Strangers - Please keep your eyes open for strangers on the docks or grounds, even if they are accompanied by a police officer. Without having permission or a warrant they have no more right to be here than they would in your own home without same. Please politely ask their business and if they have either of the above and if they don’t please ask them to leave immediately and then contact a Bridge Officer. [Source]

T
Trash - Stow your refuse in the dumpster. BUT: Do not overlod it; if full, wait and dump later.

Trash - Do not haul trash from home and dump in the BYC dumpster. Remember, it is for club use, and not for "stuff from home".

Trash - Do not pile cardboard in the disposal area, BYC does not reycle cardboard. Flatten it and put in the dumpster (Or: take it home and use your home recycling service).

Trash - ... if you arrive at the dumpster and it is brimming over, please do not put trash on top if the receptacle is full and cannot be closed. Also, do not leave trash on the sides of the dumpster. This extra trash doesn't get picked by Waste Management staff and is left for our House and Grounds team to pick up by hand. The Yacht club is home to us all, whether we live aboard or away, we all need to be mindful of polluting our area. If everyone could crush and condense what they have prior to throwing it away, there will be more room toward the end of the week when the bins are filling. [Source]

W
Wake - please watch your wake, particulary when transiting the whole area of Port Washington Narrows. One of our members noticed a couple of fellow members leaving quite a wake as they went by Evergreen Park, causing children on the float to "hold on for dear life", and a boater trying to launch his boat almost lose it when the BYC member's wake hit the shore. Having a child injured or a boat damaged as a result of one of our member's inconsiderate action would be a heavy load to have on your conscience as well as potentially being very expensive. [

Waste & Garbage - Although we have paid employees as caretaker and facility manager, their job is not to “pick up” after us. I have noticed unwashed dishes left in the galley sinks, paper and magazines left on the floors of the heads, toilets unflushed, personal garbage in trash containers, soda and beer cans as well as paper cups just left around the grounds. Please take a minute to look around and pick this stuff up as you move about the grounds and docks. Better still, do not drop it in the first place. Help keep BYC looking great! Thanks! [Source]

Waste Water Treatment - A two-page write-up by Mike Leedy was part of the July 2003 Towline. Here you found a number of important Dos and Don'ts for your environmentally friendly and DOE-required behavior on the Railway. The pages also referred to the 'Revised Wastewater System Operating Instructions' and the updated 'Pressure Washing Checklist' posted in the Winch House (on the bulletin board adjacent to the pressure washing switches).

Workshop - After using the shop, clean up after yourself.

Workshop - The shop is not for personal long-term storage.

Workshop - The shop is not for commercial use.

Workshop - Warning; do not leave personal tools in the shop; there is a good chance they will not be there when you return.

Workshop - If you use any of the tools in the shop please take the time to clean up after yourself when done and leave it safe for the next person. What that means is, unplug the tool, and lower the table saw blade. KEEP YOUR SHOP CLEAN AND SAFE. Should you find any tool damaged or unsafe, report it to a member of the Shop Committee or the Rear Commodore. [Source]
