The weather this summer has been great for cruising and I know
many of you have been taking the opportunity to get out on the water and
enjoy your boats with your families. Lynne and I have managed to take a
couple of short trips and have several more planned before the end of August.
Nothing like the expeditions up to British Columbia some of you are on
now.
Recently, Lynne and I cruised to our outstation at Oro Bay and, as always,
enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the location. Captain Bryan Golden,
Chairman of our Oro Bay Outstation, and I had an opportunity to walk the
property. Bryan has assumed the role as caretaker and takes real pride
in the outstation. He puts in many hours of his time mowing the grass,
installing electrical lights, fixing dock receptacles and cleaning up after
us. Anyone that has met Bryan knows that he is a hard worker, doesn't complain
and always has a cheerful smile for everyone. Cleaning up after us is not
his responsibility! It is yours! Generally we do a pretty good job, but
some of our members think they can leave their trash at Oro Bay and it
will be disposed of. Yup! You guessed it. Bryan takes it in his vehicle
to the dump. Treat Oro Bay like a campsite - pack it in and pack it out!
Bring it home and dispose of it in the BYC dumpster. I have seen members
take trash and garbage off their boat and carry it up to the gazebo and
dump it in one of the empty trash containers that are there for our cruise-ins
and picnics just before leaving for home. Save Bryan work and take it home.
Leaving recyclables at Oro Bay does not benefit BYC and again Bryan carries
it away for you. Take it home.
Bryan has a couple of workparty projects planned that will require some
strong backs and shovels to spread gravel and dirt to level the grassy
areas. Also take some pruning shears when you go and prune out honeysuckle
and blackberries.
Captain Brett Halffman and his Annual Committee are hard at work
on this year's annual and need pictures of you and your boat ASAP. Please
get them in so we can have an annual with smiling faces filling every page.
Just think, how many times have you gone to the annual to look up some
member that you met, but did not know their name. Well, your name and face
is not known to everyone either. Help them to get to know you!
Enjoy the summer and Lynne and I may see you out there somewhere.

July started with a bang at Poulsbo on the 3rd with an informal
raft up of 10 boats. The weather was perfect, the bay was crowded and Poulsbo
once again put on a great show.
July 15th saw the beginning of a new and exciting program at BYC, the
Youth Sailing Program. This has been long talked about but this year it
happened thanks to the efforts of Capt. Joe Payne. He put a lot of work
into putting the program together and a presentation to the "E" Committee
for approval and he also made repairs to the dinghy dock and the work float
to accommodate the kids and boats. Well done, Joe. I'd also like to thank
the Vice Commodore of Poulsbo Yacht Club, Skip Peters, for his mentoring
to get the program going and especially for the loan of 7 sailboats for
the kids to practice their new skills. Many thanks, my friend.
The next time you haul out and are working on your transom you won't
have to deal with those heavy planks we've fought for years. We now have
a 24" wide aluminum plank that is a delight to handle in comparison. Thanks
to Capt. Vic Potter for acquiring it for BYC.
The galley! Work is progressing slowly. We are awaiting an electrical
inspection and the hood installation has presented some code problems that
are being worked out. Work Party Chair, Capt. Don Sherwood, needs your
help. Help us get YOUR galley finished AND get YOUR work party time in
also. Even if you're not handy with tools, there are other things that
need to be done. By the way, you landlords out there, we still have one
good looking, works well gas range for sale. $50 bucks and it's yours.
My piano dolly that was being used to move the heavy items in the galley
is missing. I know someone just borrowed it and forgot to return it. We
really need it. Save someone's back from serious injury so please bring
it back.
Upcoming events begin with the Annual Officers Cruise In on Aug. 2,3
and 4. The paint dock will be blocked out to club use to accommodate the
expected 39 boats. If your slip, shed or cover will be available then please
inform the Float Chair, Capt. Jim Picinich and the Rear Commodore. Also,
there will be rafting out between the strings so if your boat is close
in and you plan to use it that weekend, you'll want to remove it by the
night of Aug. 3rd. Same considerations will apply for the PC Cruise In
on Aug. 23, 24 and 25.
Aug. 14, has Capt. Dave Cleator, First Mate Janet and crew putting on
our last Picnic in the Park. You know how fun these P in P's are so sign
up early. No one goes away hungry, guaranteed.
The Northwest Marine Trade Assoc. Is offering us A Night at the Mariners.
Tickets are $10 (normally $16) Date is Sept. 16, 7:05 is first pitch, seats
are in section 313 and 315, and we are playing the Texas Rangers. If interested
make checks payable to NMTA and put in my box by Aug. 5th. Sounds like
a fun time.
See you in the Gulf Islands!

Its August already. I hope it goes slowly by, and that
any hint of autumn is a long way off. Taking stock of a few things
around the club that I want to bring to the attention of everyone.
The B.Y.C.K.P., a.k.a. B.Y.C. Kitchen Project, is still underway.
The Galley counter has been removed leaving a good supply of decorative
rock looking for a new home. It can be found by the North entrance
stairs if anyone can find a use for it.
Speaking of things needing a home. The clubhouse closet
has quite a number of abandoned articles of clothing that need to be claimed.
If you are missing a jacket, cap, or sweater, you might find you have left
it there. Things that are not retrieved by the end of the month will
find a new home at St. Vinnie's.
The clubhouse flag and burgee halyards have been replaced. Thanks
to Captain Charles Billings for the fine job he did. Those
certainly aren't "cagilligan hitches" on those ropes.
If you have come to the clubhouse recently, you have probably noticed
the security gate is now working again. We now have a new and
upgraded gate closure. Thank you goes to Captain Al Gonzales for
his fine
work.
The weekend of August 2 - 4 B.Y.C. will be hosting the
Grand
Fourteen Officers Cruise In. We need to utilized as many open
slips
as are available. If you have plans to be away cruising on that weekend,
and wouldn't object, we would like to offer your vacant slip to one of
our guests. Please drop me a note letting me know if this is something
that you can do. It would be appreciated.
Thank you, see you out there.

The new curtains are finished in the lounge thanks to Sylvia
Wilson and her sweat shop sewing crew. This past year
Skipperettes have been very busy helping with the up-dating of the
club; from curtain making, table covers,
painting, and re-framing it has been a lot of fun. This fall we are
looking forward to helping with the
re-organization of the galley.
Skipperettes will hold it?s first fall meeting on September 11th, 11:30
social and Noon brown bag picnic in the
park. Guest are always welcome to attend. If you are interested please
call Gerri Bachman, President, 692-5004 for
more information

Our first big cruise of the season is history and we had a
fine turn out. Nineteen boats made it all the way to Olympia, including
those famous Shelton explorers, Gary 'Magellan' Clauson and Cliff 'Columbus'
Lillybridge. The weather was awesome and the facilities at Swantown
Marina were great. Most boats arrived Friday afternoon in time for
cocktails and dinner at their favorite Olympia restaurant. Saturday
morning started with a breakfast of Thomas Tummytuckers and eye openers.
The rest of the day was dedicated to touring the Capital building, shopping
or a visit to the Farmers Market.
Saturday evening found us at the marina park dining on BBQ port sandwiches
and coleslaw. The cocktail hour was followed by another cocktail
hour and another, well you get the idea.
Sunday breakfast included French toast, pastries, fruit and of course,
eye openers. We were treated to lunch on the dock with leftover BBQ
sandwiches and then a blindfolded dingy race. Debbie and Dave Hagen
proved to be the team to beat while the rest of us just beat up the bows
of our own boats with the oars and dinghies. Hagens even beat a challenging
team from Quartermaster harbor Yacht Club. Our Blackout Bingo game
was a success once the code was cracked and Rick and Maralee Ormiston were
the first place finishers.
We had lasagna for Sunday's dinner, thanks to all who donated your time
and ovens. After dinner the cocktail hour continued aboard Harry
and Paula Davis's Fairwinds. The music and the mast were rocking
far into the evening.
Monday's cruise home was in beautiful weather. All in all we had
a great time, even though we were not at Oro Bay. Sometimes different
can be fun.
I would like to thank those who helped Cathy and I get through our first
cruise: P/C Mark & Roxanne Miller, Capt. Rick & Maralee Ormiston,
Capt. John & Denise Rosendale, P/C Leo & Sue Longenecker and everyone
else who lended a hand! Thank you!

Local log racing has taken it's normal summer break, with the
next IPBA north sound race in September, at Seattle Yacht Clubs Port Madison
outstation. This race is always a good one, and is one big super social
event. There is one race this summer, the IPBA International Cruiser Race
(ICR), and is a must race for anyone chasing the IPBA points.
The ICR will be in Canada this year, to be held on August 3rd and be
run out of Thetis Island, British Columbia. The points received are 2.25
times the normal points for this one race. This year the normal entry fee
is being waived, in hopes that more skippers will enter. This race is always
a lot of fun, and the Canadians always have lots of fun. Many of those
racing will be staying up in the BC area to do some cruising or attending
the North American Invitational (NAI) National Championship log race which
is the next weekend in Vancouver. Several BYC skippers have volunteered
the use of their boats for the NAI championship race.
The ICR race log was sent out with the IPBA news letter, the Unpredictable
Log. If you did not get a copy, copies are available at the BYC clubhouse.

Annual Needs Your Submissions;
Its the summer season, and that means that once again the annual
committee is collecting information for another BYC annual. We hope to
have the annual ready for publishing by September, so the sooner we can
make all our changes and updates, the better.
What does this mean for you? If you have any information to submit
to the annual, please do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting until
the last minute. This especially includes contact information, address
changes, phone number changes, and your email address. (we added 40 email
addresses last year, but with close to 300 members, we are still missing
many addresses). We also still have missing pictures, either of people
or of boats. Flag officers and Skipperette officers, we'll also need
you formal pictures.
Plus if you have anything noteworthy or informative that should be in
the annual.
Submissions should be placed in the annual box in the clubhouse or e-mailed
to bycannual@bremertonyachtclub.org. You can also also contact the annual
chair Bret Halffman at: modernd@hotmail.com or the web coordinator

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web
page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be
used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of
BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.
Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the
web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how
to setup and modify web pages, contact bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We
are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing
in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic
storage of the club history.
If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way
to earn points. A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you
want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web
page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments,
and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and
relevant to members of the community.
Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact daveu@sptddog.com
to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email addresses
for next years annual.
