WebGuy happy to retire after 9 years!

May 2010

BYC' new WebTeam, i.e. Jerry Wein & Jim Pooler, have, after months of preparations, assumed their new jobs. That means that after 9 years, your "old & tired" PastWebGuy (PWG) can now finally go sailing. Web work is time consuming and involves many different tasks, from writing and proofreading to photo processing, content organization, design, coding/programming and up- & downloading files. Web technologies have developed fast, and this WebGuy did not have the inclination, time or the programming background to master all of the tasks needed for the future. Tomorrow's Web work, for a club like ours, will be more specialized and require either multi-talented individuals with plenty of time on their hands or a "team" of people with different skills and preferences. Contact Jerry or Jim if you are interested in learning new or applying old skills or talents.

What the outgoing WebGuy hopes is that the Club will continue to expand the use of the Internet and various interactive Web tools to help communicate with and among its members and will increasingly incorporate "Web Thinking" and Web technologies in support of the organization, operation and historical documentation of BYC activities.

Thanks to all our members who tirelessly helped the Web effort by contributing photos, writing stories or creating other content for the many pages on our site (see the old "Site Map"). If you have contributed in the past, please continue to do so. If you have not yet tried out your own Web creativity, maybe you find a way to help inform or entertain your fellow members and, at the same time, be able to admire your own pictures, posters, reports or short stories on BYC's Web site.

Some Web History at BYC: 2001 - 2010

-- At a BYC Business Meeting in June 2001, the WebGuy heard a presentation by a young BYC member, Dave Uebele (employed at Cisco) that he was interested in setting up some structure for a Website so as to provide information about the Club and general boating information to both club members and the public. The WebGuy (gk) was drawn to this mission having seen how his web-oriented assignments in teaching his classes at the UW had improved students' communication and collaboration skills. BYC's Web Team was born! Dave registered the bremertonyachtclub.org domain name with Gandi (in Paris), negotiated with Telebyte Northwest to host the site, and designed the "general look" of BYC's first Web page. The Web Guy began to HTML code content on "holding pages" which Dave had prepared. Requests for content contributions by members were announced at Business Meetings and published from then on in the Towline as well as on the Web site. Many BYC members, acknowledged throughout the Site, helped the Web Team by contributing photos, writing stories* (more than anyone: Bob Wheeler*) or creating other content which made it possible to have an updated Web Site available (more or less) daily, sometimes on an hourly basis!

-- By June 2002 the website pages seemed still rudimentary. Dave & Gunter would hash out ideas after Business Meetings for how best to continue to develop the site. By December 2002, the present 2-column format for the Home Page was first established where current news items and reports by BYC officers would be featured. Club members & committees chairs continued to submit articles & photos for publishing. Often the Towline editor would forward contributions to the Web Team. The WebGuy incorporated his retirement gift of a digital camera with Photoshop software to edit and insert photos in BYC's web pages e.g. Youth Sailing Program, prepare slide shows e.g., for the History of Heavy Weather, and maps for the Lighted Boat Parade. In 2003, the Float Committee's "Available Slips for Bidding", later the Float/Dock Map, and Points earned were added and, according to the unrecorded grapevine, greatly welcomed by members. An A-Z Index, Google BYC embedded Search engine and Year in Review served as aids to navigating the site. Commodore Bill Rumbold provided encouragement along the way e.g. his May 6, 2003 email: "You all have done a fantastic job in organizing and maintaining our website. One of my pet peeves is to go into a website and find old data or info that has not been updated in six months It puts into question all of the info the site its trying to display. NOT SO with ours!!!! You guys stay on top of it all the time. Thanks for a job well done!"

-- From 2004 onwards, additions to the site included the Club's Monthly Calendars updated by the Commodore; social events with photos e.g. Oktoberfest, Picnics in the Park*, Salmon Bake, Crab Feed; New Members Introductions; History Pages celebrating 75th Anniversary (incl. Commodore Photos since 1929 taken from wall, scanned, & uploaded!); photos & reports of the Bridge Families and Articles of BYC Events published in the Media. In January 2005, Commodore Ron Morse took the initiative and had an old computer from the basement re-configured to provide wireless/ comcast access to the Internet in the Clubhouse. Finally, the Webteam's almost 4 years of development work for BYC's extensive website became more directly useful to members through orientation sessions to the site while in the clubhouse.

--A major re-organization of the site also occurred in 2004, i.e., the division into a "Public" & a "Member's Only" section requiring Dave to use his newly learned PHP language skills to assure security was in place. Gunter was now challenged to confirm and add the Online Registered Members*, Bylaws & Regulations, the Towline, the Treasurer's List of Members* and the General* and Executive Meeting Minutes*, Fleet Captain's & Cruise Page* and the Fleet Surgeon's Page* A “Site Map” was added which explicitly distinguishes between public and members-only pages for additional transparency and to help members and non-members navigate the site. Another Commodore, Don Hardgrove, provided encouragement to sustain these efforts July 2007 “We have an incredible team, and the updates to the web, publicity for the club are outstanding. Oftentimes, large or small web sites are updated quarterly, so we are very fortunate to be able to log on to the BYC Web Site and find something new oftentimes on a daily basis. Thanks again for making the communications so accessible for so many.”

WebGuy accepts 2008 Service Prize on behalf of WebTeam

A Public Service Message to BYC's Most Frustrated Online Members:

Misplacing your password is a very common affliction, but there is hope & a cure! Just send an Email to krumme(at)telebyte(dot)com, and we will come up with a new one for you. Should you have lost sight of your username, ask some other member to look it up for you in the (Members-Only) Directory or simply send another Email to us. It is that easy! You would not want to miss any of the exciting happenings on the Members-Only pages, such as the information-laden Minutes of the Executive Committee or, much more inspiring, the numerous columns which have been written by members and which we have been publishing on an irregular basis.
Otherwise, we expect a New Year's Resolution from you for your greater or continued Web participation!
Happy 2008!
Your BYC WebTeam

Contact the BYC WebTeam by identifying the Email address of a member in the members-only directory* or in the BYC Annual. Alternatively, please send your Email to bremertonyc(at)comcast.net with a request to forward it to a member of the WebTeam. The old Email address of the WebTeam [bycwebteam@etc.] had to be deactivated due to excessive SPAM (unwanted mail) exposure.

The entire Bremerton Yacht Club Web Site has been an evolving project since May 2001. There is already a "fair" amount of information here, but more is still to be written and posted. If you see errors or have additional information to add to the Web site or any specific page, please contact a member of the BYC WebTeam.

The mission of the  Bremerton Yacht Club Web Site is to provide information about the Club and general boating information to both club members and the public.  Content of the site is published by the BYC WebTeam, a part of the Technology committee. Information for the site is requested from club committees and club members. Members' names will not normally be shown unless they belong to club officers. If other full names are displayed, it will be only with permission. Comments on how to improve the site and suggestions for additional information are (more than) welcome. Members interested in helping with the web should contact a member of the BYC WebTeam.

If you have submissions, send them in whatever format you can. Style and standards are still being determined. We can deal with a variety of data formats and adapt them to the web page.

Note that these pages are being developed and test-viewed with Netscape and/or Internet Explorer. If you have problems viewing our pages with a different web browser, contact the web team, we want this information to be usable regardless of web browser.  We would like the page to be pleasant to read and use by most newer browsers and also still be usable by a vision impaired user on a text based browser like Lynx.

Visit your BYC Web Site
And contribute to its History Pages!

JULY 2003: As you may have noticed, the Webteam has increased its capacity to provide almost instant information about BYC events and other urgent matters, i.e. we can update our BYC WebPage on a (more or less) daily, sometimes on an hourly basis.

That should mean that the BYC Page could become more useful as an (almost) real-time communication tool for scheduling committee meetings and events, changing meeting schedules, providing minutes of meetings for absent members or posting other time-sensitive information.

You may want to discuss this with your committee, identify those members who may still have to be notified through other means, and decide to give it a try. Who knows, you may like it... Contact a member of the WebTeam, discuss your needs and maybe make arrangements as to where within the BYC WebSystem your committee information could be located or how it should be linked. Looking forward hearing from you! (Your WebTeam)

Navigating your BYC Website

March 2006

Over the past (almost) five years, our BYC Web System has grown to a respectable size. With this increased size comes an ever greater navigational sophistication.

Most visits to the Web site start with the BYC Home page which contains some but does not have enough space for very much directly informative "content". Some real content (e.g. the Commodore's latest report) is just one click away. Most items on the Home page, however, are links to "subdirectories" designed to organize most of the ultimate content (which therefore is at least two "clicks" away).

The members-only section introduced in 2004 has added some necessary additional complexity which, however, we have tried to keep in reasonable limits. At least initially, this new section required a second (members-only) home page. Increasingly, we try to integrate the two types of pages and signify limit-access pages with a simple "*". Unfortunately, this also means that non-members will run into frequent "no access" signs.

To help members and non-members with added transparency and accessibility, we also created a "sitemap" . This schematic organization of pages distinguishes explicitly between public and members-only pages.

BYC's subdirectories are organized by:
1. Topic. Our sailing page (bremertonyachtclub.org/bycSailBoat.html ) or history page (bremertonyachtclub.org/bycHistory.html) are good examples. Most of the items in the very left column of the homepage guide you to topical subdirectories.
2. Chronological date. Our various calendars are obvious examples for chronological subdirectories (e.g. bremertonyachtclub.org/bycCalIndex.html). Our monthly bridge and committee reports as well as the Newsletter are also chronologically organized. We also organize the photo reports of events chronologically via the "Year in Progress/Review" pages.
3. The alphabet. In our comprehensive "Index" (bremertonyachtclub.org/indexpage.html) you will find almost any BYC topic or important name, from "P/C Adams" (1933) to the "Oktoberfest" and the "Youth Sailing Program." However, on this page, you also find our own Google search engine which may get you still quicker to what you are looking for. Yes, that's right, we have a very comprehensive and fast search mode calibrated just for our BYC Web site! Try it, you will like it!

These subdirectories lead largely to BYC's own pages. In addition, there is a fairly comprehensive "external" directory with links to many marine-related organizations or topics outside BYC. (bremertonyachtclub.org/bycLinks.html).

More navigational help will be appropriate in the future. Please never hesitate to express your opinions and suggestions regarding the organization of BYC's Web site! Happy Navigation!
Your WebTeam.

  • Did you know that (as part of the effort to help you celebrate BYC's 75th Anniversary) our historian, P/C Bob Wheeler has not just assembled all kinds of documents dealing with BYC's history on our Website, but has downloaded many of these materials and made them available in a ring-binder in the Clubhouse? There is a section labeled "comments" where your written feedback is solicited.
